New York HUT Certificate of Registration
Vehicles operating in New York State must
have one of these two certificates of registration:
• A NYHUT certificate is required for any truck, tractor, or
self-propelled vehicle with a gross weight (either alone
or in combination) of more than 18,000 pounds.
• An automotive fuel carrier (AFC) certificate is required
for any truck, trailer, semitrailer, or other attached
device transporting automotive fuel having a gross
weight (either alone or in combination) of more than
18,000 pounds.
Failure to obtain a decal as required, you face a penaltyof up to $3,500 for each unregistered vehicle.
What is IFTA?
IFTA is an agreement among states. The carrier's base jurisdiction issues credentials that allow motor carriers to operate in more than one jurisdiction.
What kinds of Vehicles qualify for an IFTA PERMIT
a Qualified motor vehicle means a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for transportation of persons or property, and:
• It has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, and/or
• Having three or more axles regardless of weight, and/or
• Is used in combination and the gross vehicle weight of the combination is more than 26,000 pounds
The IFTA license is valid for the calendar year January 1 through December 31. The carrier is riquired to file a quarterly fuel tax report. This report must be filed even if you had no activity for the quarter. The report is used to figure the net fuel tax or refund due and to redistribute taxes from collecting states to states that it is due.
If a carrier is found operating a qualified motor vehicle without an IFTA license, the vehicle operator may be subject to the purchase of a trip permit and a fine.
